Treatments

A movement disorder diagnosis is different for each person.

Healthcare professionals consulting with a patient about movement disorder treatment options

For some people, symptoms are extremely subtle and may progress slowly. For others, changes are more noticeable and progression occurs more quickly. There is no one-size-fits-all treatment plan. Every treatment approach is individualized to meet each patient’s specific needs.

Once evaluated and diagnosed, the experts at the Chase Family Movement Disorder Center work together to develop a personalized treatment plan designed to maximize quality of life.

Depending on symptoms and other factors, care may also involve specialists including neurosurgeons, neuropsychiatrists, urologists, physiatrists, gastroenterologists, sleep medicine specialists, ophthalmologists, cardiologists, pain specialists, and primary care physicians.

Patients may also be connected with speech therapists, physical and occupational therapists, geneticists, nutritionists, social workers, psychotherapists, integrative medicine practitioners, and palliative or home-care providers.

To support overall well-being, physical strength, and flexibility, recommended activities may include dance, yoga, tai chi, or boxing programs.

Treatment Options

  • Botulinum toxin injections for dystonia, facial spasms, or spasticity.
  • Deep-brain stimulation surgery to implant electrodes in the brain that interrupt abnormal brain activity, functioning similarly to a pacemaker for the brain.
  • High Intensity Focused Ultrasound , an incisionless procedure for patients with essential tremor and Parkinson’s disease.
  • Peripheral nerve stimulation devices that help control arm tremors.
  • Intra-jejunal or subcutaneous pumps that administer dopaminergic medications through continuous infusion.
  • Fast-acting medications delivered through injection or inhalation to supplement stable medication regimens.
  • New pharmacologic medications, as available, to supplement current treatments.
  • Rehabilitation programs for Parkinson’s disease and other movement disorders including dystonia, tremors, tics, ataxia, chorea, and gait disorders.
  • Specialized physical and speech therapy programs including SPEAK OUT!® and THE LOUD CROWD!® , as well as PWR for PD, Maintenance Crew, and Seated Flow exercise classes.

At the Chase Family Movement Disorders Center, helping patients live life to the fullest despite a movement disorder diagnosis is the highest priority.
